LLNL’s High Energy Density (HED) Science Center helped organize a two-day workshop regarding national security and HED science, held in January 2018 at the University of California (UC) San Diego. The workshop offered an introductory exploration of the national security dimensions of HED science from technical, policy, and international perspectives.

Scientists from national laboratories, current and former policy experts from federal agencies, and university faculty provided a diverse array of views on the role and importance of HED science to national security.

Key issues addressed at the event included the Stockpile Stewardship Program and HED science, pulse power and HED science, and comparing how HED science research and development is taking place in the U.S. and other nations. A similar workshop is planned for 2019.
